PORTRAITS AND PATTERNS

P.S. 53

Manhattan, New York

Commissioned through the Sites For Students Program of the NYC Board of Education and the NYC School Construction Authority

Artist Robin Holder, with assistance from Kathy Mikulewicz London

This project was a unique experience which brought together an unusual group of kindergarden and junior high school students. Several of the older students were in a special education class. The young people participated in a series of printmaking and portrait drawing workshops for 6 months. The students created a number of drawings, collages, and stamp prints which were developed into linoleium block prints, monoprints and collagraphs. They used a table top etching press to print their plates. The imagery from their work was then translated into 7 ceramic tile murals.
