Mosaics for a playground floor, 1995

Project created by artist Carmen Vossen with two classes of children, 10/11 years old ,with help from neighbors and fathers in Amsterdam-East. The children are mostly from Morocco, Turkey and Surinam. About 200 mosaics were laid in the pavement of a playground surrounded by the children's homes.

The mosaics were inspired by the Moroccan "zelij" style. Paper mosaics were used to plan the design which was executed in broken pieces of tiles laid into 30cm x 30cm frames of a cement and sand mixture.
