Fieldston Lower School is an elementary private school located in Riverdale, New York. We have incorporated tile work into our curriculum for seven years. Fifth Grade students have created tile murals based on their study of Medieval Islam, using tessellated geometric shapes. A mosaic water fountain, sundial, and birdbath were also created.with handmade mosaics. Fourth graders created a mural of "watery" tiles with sea creatures sculptures added on in connection with their study of seafaring explorers.
Currently, we are planning to mosaic the outside of a garden shed and make a tables with multicultural game boards. Students are also designing individual mosaic panels based on the Moroccan "zalij", shaped mosaic pieces.
The computer curriculum at our school also explores concepts related to tile work. Each Fifth grader designs repeat tessellations using the Logo programming language.
