General Information

ECF has embarked on a major architectural project that will result in exciting additions to the Fieldston campus over the next three years:
  • a new academic building for an expanded (6-8) middle school
  • renovations to existing space that will provide new classrooms for music and performing arts
  • new athletic facilities, including a double gymnasium and a 6-lane pool
  • a new dining hall and kitchen
  • a new student commons
  • much needed meeting space for faculty.

The project will also result in new and recaptured space at our elementary campuses. The ECF board of trustees unanimously approved this expansion in June 2004, the culmination in a series of decisions taken by the board over the past year, each authorizing the process to move forward. It has also authorized a major capital campaign, the size of which will be determined over the coming months.

Goals

To increase classroom space and athletics facilities throughout the school; to better meet the needs of our 11-14-year-olds by providing a distinct academic setting for an expanded (6-8) grade middle school ; to repurpose and reconfigure the space gained by the lower schools and the high school when the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades move to the new space on the Fieldston campus, most likely in 2007.

Background

It began with a thorough strategic plan process in 1999 that involved over 125 parents, students, and faculty, and identified the priorities of the school for the future. It became a giant wish list. Following the events of 9/11, we took a look at our most urgent needs and came up with 'an elegant solution' - an economical plan that would benefit every child in the school.
