Multicultural Committees
ECF has standing committees on the board of trustees and in the parent & teacher (P&T) organization that are focused on diversity. Although the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion are a part of the conversation throughout the ECF community, the committees that are focused on specific diversity issues provide critical input, feedback, and support.
The head of school and dean of faculty work closely with the board committees and the all school multicultural committee.
The diversity coordinators work with each of the committees at their respective academic divisions (Ethical Culture, Fieldston Lower, Fieldston Middle, and Fieldston Upper).
The following is a list of the current standing committees that are focused on diversity.
- Board of Trustees Diversity Committee
- Parent & Teacher Organization Committees:
- All School Multicultural Committee
- Division Multicultural Committees
- Division Learning Styles Committee

During the 09-10 school year, the ECF diversity coordinators, along with the
all-school multicultural committee, sponsored a special screening of Andre
Robert Lee’s film, The Prep School Negro, followed by a lively
discussion.
Divisional multicultural committees met throughout the
year and sponsored events, including a talk given to Fieldston
Middle parents and teachers by Howard Stevenson, associate professor
and chair of the applied psychology and human development division at the
Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. His work
emphasizes the impact of race and ethnicity on identity development. Other
events sponsored by divisional committees this past year included learning
styles meetings and outside speakers in every division, as well as an all-school
presentation by speech and language pathologist Sarah Ward.
