Description

ECFS is a co-educational, non-sectarian independent school founded in 1878 by Felix Adler, founder of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Originally opened as a free kindergarten for the children of New York City’s working class, it espouses a progressive educational philosophy, providing a rigorous intellectual environment that balances the academic, artistic, physical, and humanistic development of each child.

Diversity

Students of color make up about 35 percent of the student body, while 15 percent of the faculty and staff are people of color. There are numerous groups throughout the school, from the board to the student body, that focus on the multicultural life of the community.

Community Life

Active Parents and Teachers Association comprising numerous committees. Activity-based after-school program for grades K-5. At Fieldston, over 60 student-run organizations; student government; visual and performing arts programs; and intramural and Ivy League junior varsity and varsity sports programs. All students participate in community service.

College Placement

At ECFS, looking for the appropriate college is treated as a continuation of a student’s education; each student is encouraged to be self-reliant and thoughtful, making choices that are individually suitable and challenging. These colleges represent some of the top destinations for our students over the past several years: Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Northwestern University, Oberlin College, Princeton University, Wesleyan University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

Financial Aid

Sizeable need-based program. Application deadline is December 1. Approximately 22 percent of enrolled families receive financial aid. An optional 10-month payment plan is available to all families.
