"Sensing the Past: Hollywood Actors as Historians"

When Jim Cullen joined the History Department at Fieldston ten years ago, he drew up a slate of films he intended to show his U.S. History class. When he looked at that list, he was stunned to find that every one of them starred Daniel Day-Lewis. The experience of teaching what he half-jokingly called “The Daniel Day-Lewis film festival” year after year got Jim thinking about how historiographic visions – not just interpretations of a particular event, but ideas about the trajectory of American history as a whole – can be embedded in the career series of choices an actor. And, by extension, a great many other people, too. The result has been Jim’s eleventh book, “Sensing the Past: Hollywood Actors as Historians.” A chapter of the project was published this summer by Amazon.com as a Kindle Single. Jim will show a film clip or two and discuss the project and the role of his teaching in its evolution. Class participation required! Be sure to check out Jim’s blog at: http://www.amhistnow.blogspot.com/ to learn more about one of our most accomplished and popular teachers.
