Victorian Feminism and the Women's Movement
Feminists in London were able to start a women's movement due to the growing popularity of liberalism. Liberals generally disliked English tradition and emphasized the importance of the individual and education. Therefore, feminism, which was based on similar principles, was able to thrive in this environment.1 In addition, the support of men whom felt that, the feminist movement followed the liberal philosophy that they adhered to, was very helpful. The problem however, was that many men felt that women should have the same legal and political rights as men however they did little to change the social and financial situation that most women found themselves in. In addition, there was constant conflict with the conservatives over women's rights. For more information on the women's movement and Victorian Feminists visit: 1) ibid pg. 352-3 |
