Edouard Manet
Edouard Manet
was born in Paris in 1832 and is quite possibly the most famous of the Impressionists.
Some say he himself is not an impressionist, but all agree that his works influenced
the impressionists heavily. He studied art with Thomas Couture and was also influenced
by Goya and Velázquez. His work was very modern, and the content of some
of his works were totally new and controversial, the painting Déjeuner
sur l'herbe, 1863, depicted nude women with clothed males, something entirely
unheard of in the mid 19th century.11 Manet's
most famous works include Olympia, 1863, The Fife Player, 1866, Portrait of Zola,
1868, Execution of Maximilian, 1867, and The Balcony, 1869.12
