Impressionism
Although the
Impressionists were "historians," the term needs a definition to understand
the influences on their work. Impressionism was originally a derogatory term describing
the hazy and uncompleted appearance of the group of painter's works. The term
evolved to mean the group of painters whose works portrayed modern life. It is
very difficult to define impressionism fittingly because the term, while identifying
specific types of paintings, is itself very broad, but thankfully it is linked
to the definition of modernity.3
