The July Revolution of 1830
In the revolution of 1830 the bourgeoisie revolted against the Bourbon monarch King Charles X. When his more liberal brother Louis XVIII died in 1824, Charles X became the ruler of France. He believed that absolute monarchies were the best forms of government, and he attempted to eradicate every last trace of democracy from France during his rule. He attempted to reinstate features of the ancient regime, including removing the nation flag of France, known as the Tricoleur. He imposed many strict new laws and reconciled the nobles that had fled during the French Revolution of 1789, the settlement being paid for by increased taxes upon the people. This tyranny was quite a contrast to the rule of Louis XVIII, who had been very receptive to the will of the people. It provoked the middle class to revolt, resulting in the overthrow of Charles X and the institution of Louis Philippe as king of France.13
