Modernity          If impressionism is a term that is hard to define accurately, then it is impossible to do so with modernity with creating some sort of controversy. Nevertheless, a basic definition of it is necessary to understand the work of the impressionists and pre-impressionists. Modernity is most simply defined as change, a combination of progress and globalization. Democracy is a very new concept being compared to republics and monarchies and because of this the idea of power in the hands of the people taken from those of a select few is definitely modern. The Impressionists and pre-Impressionists' work, which embodies “change” are then by definition considered modern pieces.
