Social Realism
The Social Realists were painters
whose works had the two important properties indicated by their name. The first
was that pieces by the social realists were primarily those reflecting on society,
or what was happening during the time period. Paintings by them during the first
have of the 19th century depicted revolts and murders, as well as portraits of
the aristocracy and monarchy: paintings not commissioned by them, but ones criticizing
them. The second quality the works of the Social Realists had was attention to
detail in the work. The majority of the pieces are extremely detailed and realistic,
using a modern photographic style completely different from the abstract work
of their predecessors.
