The Rise of the Bourgeoisie
When the Bourgeoisie came to power
during the reign of King Louis Philippe a plethora of leisure time activities
were developed to satisfy the needs of the upper middle class.14
With these activities came the creation of venues for them to be conducted
in, resulting in rebuilding in parts of the city to allow for opera houses, parks,
museums, clubs, theatres and public ballrooms. This rise of the bourgeois could
be considered the direct precursor or what is now called modern society.15
