The Victorian
Era was a time of rapid change from a more traditionalist,
conservative society to a more progressive one. The government
become less controlled by the monarchy and more controlled by Parliament.
Even architecture saw a change from an emphasis on form to an emphasis
on function. But despite the change in focus, Victorian architecture
continued to revolve around keeping the facade of traditionalism while
at the same time centering around a modern, utilitarian approach.
Especially when designing train stations,
utilitarian architecture became increasingly popular during the Victorian
Era. In order to maintain the identity of London as a unique European
city, though, the utilitarian architecture of the modern was masked
by the older traditional architectural styles of previous centuries,
namely gothic revival, and renaissance.
Classical architecture can be seen most evidently in London's train
stations. |
