The Genre and it's Terms

Classicism seems to reflect a return to an established form of excellence. In art the revival of the stylized visions of the Greek classics were considered classical during the period know as the neoclassic, which directly preceded the romantic era.

 

In the 18th century the idea of Picturesque changed from that of a scene so perfect that it could be immediately transferred to the canvas, to a description of a painted scene that held a certain perfect beauty that is was considered to be Picturesque.

The Sublime is traditionally described as noble and majestic image, one of high spiritual, moral, or intellectual worth, also as an awe inspiring,impressive vision. The art to of the English Romantic Landscape artists holds all of these qualities. The works of Turner and Constable are indeed majestic visions of the rolling landscapes, and blurred urban-scapes
