Spencer
Spencer created the theroy of Social Darwinism. He applies Darwin's
natural selection
and adaptation to society. Spencer coined the fraze survival of
the fittest. It summarizes
some of what Darwin suggests but is manipulated to support his
theory. He saysd that
people are in their position in society because of natural selection.
Much like Stephen
Blackpool from "Hard Times", the hard worker was born into his
position and has to work
hard to maintain equilibria. The species on top, the elite, don't
have to work hjards while
the ones struggling have to work the most to support everything.
He says that you are
born into your position.
Because of Darwin’s
theory of evolution, more and more people tried to apply natural
selection to soceity. This was called social darwinsim. People were
trying to decide who was the "fittest." This ideology
would create racism among white europeans. Also lower workers deserved
to work as hard because thats how they survive. The harder the middle
class and lower class work, the better workers appear and the unqualified
ones are dismissed. People used evoluton to justify the existence
of poverty. The upper class rose above becaus ehtey were the fittest
and rose above other races and wrokers.
Imperialism also came out of social darwinism. It was extended
internationally. European countries felt that their greater economic
and military power entitled them to rule over weaker nations. They
saw most non-western europen countries as inferior.
Another thing soical darwinism started to justify was war. War
could be seen as a survival technique. It became a way to improve
the human race through natural selection and survival of the fittest.
Herbert Spencer was the creator of Social Darwinsim. He coined
the term "survival of the fittest." His thoughts were
controversial and led to the exploitation of the poor working class
as well as minorities. Because the wealthier people believed they
were "fit", they used the workers to their advantage claiming
if they used the capitalist system correctly, then they could climb
to the top of the class system. They would make workers work tremendous
hours in rediculous conditions. His theory impacted the sociology
and anthropology of his times. He suggested to study social life
in terms of a society’s component ‘structures’ and ‘functions’.
The Theory of Population argued that among human beings the survival
of those who are the select of their generations (in other words
those most adapted to circumstances) is a cause of development.
