The Birth of Modern Paris

A Social, Cultural, and Politcal History of the City

Delacroix's famous painting Liberty Leading the People, a scene at the barricades
during the July Revolution of 1830, reflects the revolutionary spirit of Paris
exemplified in the city's art and politics.

Paris in Microcosm

Paris, one of the great cultural centers of Europe, has had a vibrant, revolutionary history. It has given birth to
some of the greatest cultural, political, and architectural figures in European history -- including Delacroix,
Napoleon Bonaparte, and Baron Haussman -- has been the home of some of the most powerful social, political, and cultural
movements in the world, and has greatly shaped the modern age. Perhaps no other city is as clear an example of the Birth of Modern Europe.

Below are essays on topics including the social, cultural, political, and physical prehistory of the city, as well as in-depth
analyses of gender roles, literature, painting, and architecture in 19th century Paris. [Fill in more after deciding final project topics.]
