Vienna

As the capital of one of the greatest empires the world has ever known, Vienna was, in many ways, the center of eastern Europe. The city remained, longer and later than any other comparable metropolis, a symbol of the old European guard. However, despite this, Vienna was always at the forefront of cultural development., Moreover, as the modern era approached, Vienna became a mecca of art, economics, and philosophy. As one historian put it, "Vienna was able to harness the creative and intellectual resources of all of central Europe."
