The Prater's Giant Ferris Wheel
Viennese tourism was a relatively dead industry
before the mid 19th century.
The reasons for this were that the city's geographic location
was relatively
inconvenient for travelers, there were few hotels,
and there was no effective
transportation system. With the
birth of the Ringstrasse, Vienna
turned
around completely. Finally, an efficient transportation
network, widespread
accommodations, and new level of international
prestige, brought
Vienna's desirability to tourists up to par with London and Paris.
