Curriculum at Pre-K
Essential Question:
How do I work, play, and learn in my group in school?
Play is the essence of our Pre-K program. It is the children’s way of learning about themselves, the environment, and others. Through play, the children learn to communicate effectively and develop problem-solving and social skills. In the process their creativity and confidence is reinforced. Open-ended materials are always available and offer opportunities for exploration and experimentation. Young children learn best through concrete and sensory experiences.
Reading
“Book time” takes place at least once a day. These are typically whole group read-alouds. The teachers choose from wonderful children’s literature. Often the books read reflect issues discussed in the classroom: this includes many non-fiction books (seasons, harvest, nutrition, etc.) as well as fiction that brings ups real-life issues, such as being a good friend or getting along with family members. Children make use of charts around the room with the schedule and recipes – mostly “reading” pictures, but learning about sequencing, left to right progression, and other pre-reading skills.
Writing
Writing primarily consists of children dictating stories to a teacher, which are written into a book and the children illustrate. These become favorite books for read-alouds.
Math
Math is woven into the curriculum. There are many opportunities to sort, classify, count, and practice one-to-one correspondence.
