Woodworking

FL Woodworking 1The wood shop program at Fieldston Lower has existed since the school first opened its doors and is part of its historical commitment to creativity. Its curriculum is designed to support the social studies core curriculum at each grade level.

The process of woodworking itself, and the objectives of the school, provide direction for the goals of the shop program. They are: fostering of independent thinking and problem- solving, experience in following rules and working procedures, application of mathematical and spatial concepts, and nurturing of the imaginative and creative spirit.

A full range of hand tools and woodworking procedures are taught to children in grades K through 4. A number of projects on each grade level are related to the social studies curriculum. In addition children are encouraged to plan and build projects of their own choice. Teaching is individualized to meet the needs of children’s varying skills and interests.
