Graphic Communications
The Graphic Communications Department provides students with an introduction to print, motion (digital video), and web design. The theme of the Graphic Communications Department is “learn by doing.” The Fieldston News, The Literary Magazine, The Kaleidoscope, The Eagle Eye, Fieldston Video Yearbook and the Fieldston Yearbook, Fieldglass, are produced in the school print shop by their editorial staffs. Student editors assume responsibility for all facets of each publication production. This is a logical and valuable activity for those interested in the publishing aspects of graphic communications. All students desiring to function effectively on these editorial staffs are advised to receive training in the Graphic Communications Department.
Each student receives a first-hand view of printing technology and its operation. Typesetting in the print shop is done on a network of computers each equipped with desktop publishing software. The twenty Macintosh computers, two Laser Printers and one high-speed digital copier provide for fast and efficient publishing. When this system is combined with the use of a 2400 DPI digital plate-maker, one is able to take a job from idea to press in a matter of minutes. Students will also learn to create more complex artwork with the help of our Epson scanner (3D object scanning system), digital still cameras, digital video cameras, mini-DV/SVHS deck, super drives (with Clip Art Collections), and the on-site darkroom.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS III
Graphic Communications III (Print, Motion and Web Design) continues to develop skills of print, digital video and the Web. Students explore desktop publishing, multicolor offset printing, as well as digital video and the web design. Students continue to design, lay out and print individual projects in class using Adobe Creative Suite Design Software (***Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe InDesign CS, Adobe Go Live CS, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Bridge). Students also have the opportunity to design T-shirts and mouse pads in this course.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS MINOR
Graphic Communications Minor seeks to encourage students' creativity, develop their sense of aesthetic judgment and discrimination, and teach them the skills and techniques necessary to carry out a design concept from "prep" to "press". Beginning students carry out the Form III curriculum while advanced students move onto more complex skills and activities in desktop publishing, digital video and web design.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS MAJOR
Students and teachers work together as a production team, producing professional quality work for the ECFS community. This structure, designed to simulate the commercial environment, extends to all production phases: creative desktop publishing, copy preparation, pre-press operations, bindery, web design and digital video. For interested students, there are opportunities to learn to design video presentations for the web. Open to students who have had Form III Graphics or the Graphic Communications Minor or their equivalent.
