Welcome to Fieldston and to our Upper School! John Love Principal, Fieldston Upper
A few years ago, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School celebrated its 125th year , and for the Fieldston community, the vision of its founder Felix Adler remains as compelling and as revolutionary as it was in 1878. Adler believed in “deed rather than creed,” and his conviction that students should participate actively in their own education informs the lives of Fieldston students today. If you look at our course offerings, our classroom web pages , our sports calendar , our community service program , our clubs and activities , you will see for yourself how actively our students are engaged in their own learning and in exploring the world outside the school. Fieldston is known throughout the New York area and across the nation as a “progressive school". Our decision several years ago to stop offering AP courses confirmed our position as an educational leader and innovator in the independent school world. Setting labels aside, we believe that several things distinguish Fieldston from those other independent schools in New York and across the nation fortunate enough to attract students of the intellectual caliber that come to our school: - A respectful but informal relationship between students and faculty, and along with it the feeling, widely shared by our students, that their teachers care about them as people and not just as inhabitants of their classes;
- A deeply held commitment on the part of faculty, students, and parents to social justice and to a serious engagement with diversity and other issues related to the community of the Bronx, New York, the United States, and the world;
- Academic and co-curricular programs in ethics and the performing and visual arts that are as robust as and that engage the students as deeply as our programs in the traditional “academic” disciplines;
- A counseling program led by the form deans and the college counseling staff in which our students’ emotional, moral, and social development receive as much attention as their transcripts.
I hope you see some indication of these qualities in exploring our website. To find out what Fieldston is really like, please come and visit us in person. Sincerely,
John Love Principal, Fieldston Upper
