Our sustainability initiatives are part of our ethical imperative to be good stewards of our resources and the environment. As members of Green Schools Alliance, we have reduced our carbon footprint 30% in the last five years in part by purchasing of Renewable Energy Certificates for electricity and by switching to more environmentally friendly heating oil. We also are the first K-12 school in the country to get a 3-star rating from the Green Restaurant Association.
Our school composts and recycles aggressively, reduces energy usage through public awareness campaigns, and has myriad curricular activities that use our green roof at the Fieldston campus, from which Columbia University professors collect data. Sustainability is embedded in academic coursework across several divisions, including history, science and ethics classes.
