Student Activism
In keeping with the school's mission to encourage students to become socially conscious and active leaders in society, Fieldston supports a wide range of social and political activism. Students are involved in making a difference through a number of activities and projects, which are reflected in the school's student organizations, MADs, FADs, assemblies, senior projects, and other endeavors.
Examples of such activism include:
- The school's sponsorship of two buses with approximately 100 student, faculty and parentd to the Save Darfur rally in Washington, D.C. in April 2006.
- An assembly in November of 2006 that featured two Fieldston students sharing their experiences working in Uganda with AIDS orphans. and child soldiers.
- A student-organized dance that raised more than $1,800 for a non-profit organization called Operation Smile, which provides reconstructive facial surgery to indigent children and young adults in 16 developing countries and in the United States.
- A student-faculty organized FAD - Fieldston Awareness Day - that focused on Hurricane Katrina, global warming, and immigration that was followed by advisory action sessions, which allowed students to begin putting together action plans to address these issues.
- A student-run talent show, led by Form VI students and members of Students for Haiti Relief, to help the victims of the 2010 earthquake that ravaged Port-au-Prince, Haiti; more than $20,000 was raised for the cause, with all of the proceeds going to Partners in Health, an organization that has been working with the people of Haiti for more than 20 years.
