Alternative Learning Period
Alternative Learning Period, or ALP, is a two-day experiential learning program that takes place once every two years in April at Fieldston. ALP comprises a number of workshops, classes, trips, and projects that are run by students, faculty, parents, alumni, and outside leaders. ALP workshops take place both at Fieldston and off campus.
The goal of ALP is to provide worthwhile and meaningful experiences that transcend the everyday curriculum at the school and its usual manner of presentation. Many ALP courses are hands-on and experiential, which is consistent with the progressive mission of the school.
Sample ALP courses include:
- Film Noir: An American Art Form
- Hiking in the Catskills
- Japanese Dance and Culture
- West African Drumming and Culture
- Women’s Self-Defense
- The Business Behind the Show: How Broadway Shows Get Produced
- Food Glorious Food: A Culinary Walking Tour of NYC
- How Money Works
- Kayaking in Long Island Sound
- T-Shirt Printing
- Tibetan Buddhism: An Introduction
