Fieldston Student Government (FSG)
At the start of the 2010/2011 academic year, the Principals Advisory Committee (PAC) was disbanded in favor of a new, hopefully more diverse and efficient student government. The charter for the new student government was produced after intense consultation with students and faculty. The Fieldston Student Government (FSG) works to democratically address issues that affect the student body and to resolve conflict, should it arise, between the faculty or administration and student body.
The FSG is comprised of two branches:
Executive: Presidents and Cabinet
The executive branch of the FSG is made up of two presidents, who are elected in the spring, and a cabinet of students who have each submitted individual applications which are read blindly by the presidents and then selected on basis of merit purely. Each cabinet member is responsible for maintaining a dialogue with specific departments of the school (e.g., secretary of humanities, secretary of athletics, etc.) The cabinet works with presidents to establish long-term plans while working to maintain healthy, two-sided exchanges with each department. The presidents are the driving force behind the FSG. The presidents are responsible for scheduling all meetings and FSG events and oversee all
aspects of the government internally. They coordinate with the student-faculty senate and the cabinet to enact proposals put forth by students in a manner that is both swift and respectful to the current rules of Fieldston. The presidents are the student representatives to the faculty and the board of trustees and regularly attend faculty/board meetings.
Legislative: Student-Faculty Senate
The legislative branch of the FSG is made up of 12 elected members of the student body, three from each grade, in addition to three faculty representatives. The student-faculty senate is responsible for ensuring that, not only are all grades equally represented, but that actions are being taken to implement the ideas generated by the senate and cabinet. This body is responsible for voting on major policy issues, raising funds for the student grants programs, and ensuring the student body is informed on the goings on of the FSG. Additionally the senate helps to plan and execute events agreed upon by the entire FSG. The senate meets both in tandem with and independently of the cabinet and presidents.
