David Smelin and his wife, Susan, came on board as assistant camp directors in 1992. They had been directors of Hampton Day School Summer Camp in Bridgehampton, New York from 1983 to 1990. After being assistant directors at Fieldston for one summer, they were appointed by the head of school as directors in 1993.

David Smelin is now the sole director of Fieldston Outdoors Summer Day Camp. David has also been a teacher for 34 years. He spent 10 years at Brooklyn Friends School teaching combined 2nd/3rd grade classes and then 4th/5th grade classes. He came to Fieldston Lower in 1985 when his daughter was born and has been a 4th grade teacher ever since.
David is committed to maintaining a low teacher-child ratio so that every camper's experience is full, varied, and comfortable. Each group of children is supervised by an experienced NY state certified teacher assisted by additional counselors. Many of our staff members are teachers from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School as well as from public and independent schools throughout the metropolitan area.
Staff specialists in art, dance and music, as well as visiting professional musicians and artists round out the team. Campers who have just finished grades 5 & 6 design their own programs, which offer more choices, responsibilities, and challenges. They are mentored by camp staff and outside specialists in areas such as photography, weight training, sports clinics, drama, cooking, wood sculpture, and quilt-making. Swim instruction is offered three mornings a week to all campers and is overseen by certified lifeguards.

 The staff is all wonderful! We have been at other camps and there is no comparison between Fieldston Outdoors and other camp staffs.
