Fieldston Middle Shines at Model UN Conference

On January 20, the middle school Model UN team competed at HoMMUNC Jr., or the Horace Mann Model UN Conference. To get to this point involved a lot of hard work that was put in by returning eighth graders on the team, incoming seventh and eighth graders, and our mentor/teacher, Ms. Caroline Stuart.

As a returning eighth grader, I had the incredible experience of getting to help the new students in the club work their way to this first conference. I got to help them learn how to write position papers (essay-like writings that discuss the issue we are debating, our positions, and the goals that we want to achieve) and teach them about general assembly and how to work together. I also got to work as a team with a bunch of other students to bring us to the point where we could say we were prepared.

I was one of the people in charge of running this conference, and even though it was at times stressful, I had a lot of fun. Not only did we debate, we also made some memories as a team and had a great time introducing Model UN to the new students.

Model UN is so much more than debating; it is passing on knowledge to beginners, helping them through their first time, competing, and making memories together. One of my favorite parts of this conference was when our chairs shared some of their favorite moments from Model UN. They were not only funny, but genuine and meaningful. I would definitely consider Horace Mann as one of my favorite Model UN moments of middle school Model UN because of how much everyone cared, and how hard everyone tried. Congratulations to everyone who won--and good job to all the participants!
