On Friday May 4th, ten 8th grade students participated in the 2018 Bronx Middle School Math Tournament at Fieldston. We competed against several schools from the Bronx including PS/MS 194, SAR Academy, Kinneret Day School, Riverdale Country School, and MS 244. We met new friends from different schools and worked on completing challenging and fun math problems.
The tournament consisted of three timed rounds with the intention of learning how to solve problems effectively and efficiently. First was the individual round where we each answered ten difficult logic problems. In the second round, we had to work together in our school teams to complete ten logic problems. We practiced logical thinking and teamwork while working with our peers. The final round was the mix up round where we were put in groups with students from other schools. We met new friends who were also interested in math and gained new insights on solving problems. After each round, we went over solutions and different methods for each problem, so that we could more effectively understand the process of solving problems. The day ended with an award ceremony to recognize the winners of all three rounds. Thomas Vernarde '22 got third place in the individual round and the Fieldston B Team (Christopher Liu '22, Allison Okimoto '22, Brian Phillips '22, Eve Shulman '22, and Thomas Vernarde '22) got fourth place in the group round. Overall, it was a great day filled with flowing brain waves and lots of fun!
