Ceremonial Hall was bustling with around 100 members of the Ethical Culture community. The event was a Spanish fifth grade publishing party. As part of a long-standing Ethical Culture tradition, students in Joan Singer's Spanish class write and illustrate picture books en español for children in Guatemalan schools who have minimal or no access to books. The NGO that runs the school is Las Manos de Cristine.
The budding authors and illustrators walked around Ceremonial Hall, telling anyone in earshot about the writing and drawing process. It was a proud day for everyone, knowing that not only wee students deepening their understanding of the Spanish language, but that the books they created would end up in the hands of students all the way in Guatemala.
Editors note: There was also a third grade publishing party in the same week.
