On Saturday, December 1, twenty-one students from the Upper School Model United Nations club attended the United Nations International School's fifth annual conference (UNISMUNC V). Representing the countries of Rwanda, the Philippines, Kuwait, the Netherlands, and Gambia, our delegates dealt with issues that ranged from international intervention and aid, LGBTQ rights, the Hutu-Tutsi Conflict, peacekeeping in eastern Ukraine, reproductive rights, and mercenaries/private military companies in armed conflicts.
For the ancient history buffs amongst our team, we had representatives on both sides of the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage — one of whom, Zachary Z. ’20, came dressed for the occasion!
Our delegation was a talented group of skilled diplomats, which was recognized by the conference secretariat. Indeed, our team had our best result in years, including more awards — by far — than any other school there. These included:
Best Delegate awards: Cormac T. ’19, Asher Z. ’22, Aleksi S. ’22
Outstanding Delegate awards: Olivia B. ’21, Amani C. ’22, Julie J. ’21, Brian P. ’22, Lily J. ’20, Zachary Z. ’20
Honorable Mention awards: Gavin K. ’22, Spencer L. ’20, Isabella R. ’22
Verbal Recognition: Noah G. ’22, Lena H. ’22, Tanveer C. ’22
The remainder of our delegation worked very hard and did themselves and Fieldston proud at the conference: Thomas V. ’22, Sara S. ’22, Margot G. ’22, Sophie J. ’22, Morium B. ’22, and Lucy T. ’22.
