A Message from the Principal

Progressive education is centered on the belief that children learn best by doing, and there is so much to do at Fieldston Lower.

Each day, the students here engage in hands-on, authentic, and integrated learning. They explore mathematics in dynamic, small-group lessons and also as they plan and create projects in their woodworking class or social studies workshop. Through inquiry and investigation, they are all young scientists not only in science class but also when they visit campus for night-time stargazing. Our students learn the importance of fair play and teamwork during physical education class and during daily recess periods in their sprawling, child-centered play spaces.

Fieldston Lower students immerse themselves in literacy through author visits, reading group discussions, and the belief that they are authors themselves. Our students practice Spanish in class with expert teachers and in casual conversations with our numerous bilingual faculty and staff. Each student finds their voice and communicates through music, dance, visual arts, and performance. Our students understand that social studies is about what connects us as people. Our students learn from and form opinions about history, explore their personal identities, and are empowered to make a positive impact on their community.

Our dedication to ethical learning is alive each and every day at Fieldston Lower. Our students progress through Fieldston Lower understanding that their voice and interactions with others matter. They learn to become empathetic and to be responsive to the wants and needs of others. Through discovery and reflection, our students build a foundation of ethical practices that continue throughout their time at ECFS and beyond.

I hope that you will have the opportunity to visit Fieldston Lower and see progressive education and ethical learning in action. During your visit, you will experience a joyful and warm community created by families, faculty, staff, and students. Our students love to welcome visitors and see themselves as stewards of their school, comfortably sharing their opinions and asking thoughtful questions of guests. We look forward to meeting you!
