Young Dancemakers Company

Young Dancemakers Company (YDC) is a free summer dance program and ensemble made up of New York City teens. Students create their own original choreography and perform in free concerts throughout the city.

Alice Teirstein, the founder and director of YDC, has worked at Fieldston for more than three decades. She developed and directed the upper and middle school dance program. Company members, who are public high-school students, are selected annually by audition and are a mix of experienced dance students as well as those with technical and creative potential. They are encouraged to apply through the recommendation of their dance teachers, guidance counselors, or community center leaders.

In full-day intensive sessions throughout July, the company explores dance-making processes under the direction of seasoned educators and choreographers. Each season, YDC performs for thousands throughout the five boroughs. The company’s work has been seen on Channel 13 and NY1. YDC has performed at prime venues, such as Dance Theater Workshop, Ailey Citigroup Theater, the 92nd Street Y, Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, and Chelsea Piers.
