Fieldston Sports is an action-packed day program offering a wide range of age-appropriate sports including, but not limited to, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, flag football, lacrosse, and swimming. We provide campers with a nurturing environment in which they can excel and gain self confidence as they learn the benefits of teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership through competitive sports. Our staff teaches the fundamentals of each sport with positive reinforcement and also provides a culture in which the campers will be able to have fun and thoroughly enjoy each activity. Campers will be grouped by grade. A typical day begins at 9 am, when everyone meets in the varsity gym for morning meeting and attendance. The day is arranged into multiple sessions, with an hour and half for lunch and free play. Each session focuses on a specific sport, with several different sport stations available. The day ends with ice cream or other snacks at 3:30 pm, and campers can be picked up at 4 pm. Transportation is available to those living in Manhattan and Riverdale for an additional cost.
Gus Ornstein - Director
A member of the Fieldston class of 1994, Gus is the athletic director at Fieldston and has also served as the head football coach for the past 10 years. While a student at Fieldston, Gus was an all-state quarterback and all-state first baseman. He played baseball and football for Notre Dame before transferring to Michigan State. In his post-college career, he played for the St. Louis Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the New York Jets. Prior to his time in the NFL, he was drafted by the New York Yankees for whom he played one year of minor league baseball before returning to football.
Jeff Nurenberg - Assistant Director
Jeff has been a physical education teacher at Fieldston since 2007. He brings a lifetime of experience, both in day camp and sleep-away camp settings. For 15 years, Jeff was at Camp Wah-Nee in Torrington Connecticut where he worked as a group leader and basketball director. Currently, Jeff is the associate director of the Pound Ridge Day Camp in Pound Ridge, New York (which doesn't overlap with Fieldston Sports' schedule). He is Fieldston’s middle school soccer, basketball, and softball coach and is the co-director of Fieldston’s Sunday Hoops program.
Fieldston Sports is committed to providing a safe and well-supervised camp atmosphere. Each of the sports is headed by a sports director, who is a Fieldston varsity coach. Each group is supervised by a group leader, who is a teacher, an assistant teacher, or college student. Each group also has one or more counselor(s) who are high school juniors or seniors. A full-time nurse is on campus during program hours. Swim instructors and certified life guards round out the staff. Many of our staff members are teachers from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School as well as from public and independent schools throughout the metropolitan area.
