ECFS Tech Working Group meeting on “AI Companions and Chatbots”

May 27 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

RSVP to receive the meeting link.

Nearly 3 in 4 teens have used an AI companion. Over half use one regularly.

Most parents have no idea what their child is talking to — or about what.

The ECFS Technology + Community Committee is hosting Dr. Mitch Prinstein — Senior Science Advisor of the American Psychological Association and co-director of the Winston Center on Technology and Brain Development at UNC  — for a conversation built specifically for parents.

Dr. Prinstein has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on the psychological harms of AI chatbots on children and adolescents. He’ll walk us through what the science actually says:

  • Why the adolescent brain is uniquely vulnerable to AI companions
  • How chatbots are engineered to be sycophantic — and why that deepens loneliness over time
  • What makes AI meaningfully different from social media
  • Why kids increasingly trust AI more than their own parents and teachers
  • Concrete, evidence-based things you can do at home this week
