A conversation with the Fieldston Alumni Network’s (FAN) Chair and Vice Chair

The bonds formed during school years often last a lifetime, shaping not only friendships but also values of leadership, service, and community. In this conversation with Fieldston Alumni Network (FAN) chairs Jason Lightning ’11 and Dan Lederman ’06, we explore how their experiences at ECFS inspired their involvement, the impact of the alumni network on current students and families, and their hopes for FAN’s future.

Together with the 15 members of the FAN Leadership Council (FANLC) — a dedicated group of alumni working to provide programs, support the School’s mission, and strengthen alumni connections — they are helping ensure that the ECFS community continues to thrive well beyond graduation.

How did your experiences at ECFS inspire you to take on a leadership role with FAN?

Jason: My decision to take on a leadership role with FAN stems from my amazing experience at the School, which shaped who I am today. I made some of my closest friends at Fieldston, and to this day, they remain my best friends. Fieldston also taught me how to be a leader by emphasizing the importance of being an ethical and responsible member of society. That sense of community and responsibility motivated me to give back, and getting involved with FAN felt like a meaningful way to support the institution that had such a lasting impact on my life.

Dan: My years at Ethical Culture and then at Fieldston were the most formative of my life. ECFS taught me to be curious, to think critically, and to make decisions with purpose. It showed me how to create a positive impact not just for myself but for others. When the chance came to give back, joining FAN — and later stepping into the Vice Chair role — felt like a natural decision.

In your view, what are some of the most meaningful ways FAN can support current students and families?

Dan: The alumni network is incredibly strong, and discovering that someone went to ECFS often creates an instant connection. We already have a networking platform called Fieldston Connect available for alumni to share advice and mentorship. This year, we’ve discussed potentially expanding the platform to include current students. We believe that providing them with direct access to alumni for internships, college application support, and mentorship helps them start their alumni journey while still at ECFS, with a strong community already behind them.

Jason: One of the most meaningful ways FAN can support current students and families is by tapping into the strength of the alumni community. Fieldston alums are always willing to help — whether through tutoring, mentoring, offering advice, or making connections. Creating more formal opportunities for these interactions can make a huge difference, supporting students academically and socially while reinforcing a sense of belonging across generations.

How can current parents and families play a role in supporting FAN’s mission and work?

Jason: Parents and guardians should encourage their children to stay involved with Fieldston after graduation. They can also actively engage with alumni to help foster deeper connections, and families can play a key role in bridging the gap between current students and the alumni community.

Dan: Current families play a big role in showing students what it means to be part of the ECFS community long after graduation. Parents and guardians can encourage their children to attend events, connect with alumni, and see the value in staying involved. As an active parent with a child in kindergarten at Ethical Culture, I see every day how important it is to make those connections early and to show families that this community extends well beyond the classroom years. Families can also engage directly with alumni, whether by helping young alumni build relationships in fields that align with their careers or by connecting with more established alumni to support their own professional growth. Either way, it strengthens the ties across our community.

Why is it important for you to stay connected to your alma mater?

Jason: Your Fieldston experience doesn’t end after graduation — in many ways, it’s just beginning. My connections have opened doors I never imagined would be possible when I graduated in 2011, and I find real satisfaction in giving back to a place that has given me so much. Staying involved can mean attending alumni events, coming to Homecoming, mentoring a student, or simply sharing advice — all of which strengthen the community for those who come after you.

Dan: ECFS gave me my closest friends and a deep sense of home whenever I return to campus, so staying connected was never really a question. For students, my advice is simple: show up. Attend Homecoming, participate in events with friends, and continue building on the community you already have. While community is the priority, every contribution matters. Even a small financial gift helps strengthen the tradition and begin your Loyal Oaks journey — it’s about participation and pride, not the amount.

Looking ahead, what’s one hope you have for FAN?

Dan: I hope to see alumni engagement continue growing in both big and small ways. Last year’s events — from reunions and the Eagles Playdate to pre-Thanksgiving gatherings — showed strong participation. My goal is to maintain that momentum, create more opportunities to connect between events, and introduce new initiatives, including community service projects that allow alumni to give back together.

Jason: Not to mention, we would love to strengthen the alumni community in cities other than New York City. We have an excellent community here in NYC, but it would be great to enhance our presence in other areas and host more events.

From strengthening alumni ties across generations to creating opportunities for mentorship, Jason and Dan highlight how the Fieldston experience extends far beyond graduation. Their reflections show that FAN is not just about alumni gatherings — it’s about sustaining a vibrant, supportive community that uplifts students, families, and graduates alike. With continued engagement from alumni and families, the spirit of ECFS will only grow stronger in the years to come.
