A Message from the Principal
Welcome to Fieldston Middle. Building on the foundation of Felix Adler’s vision for the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, we engage students in the middle school years as they continue to develop ethical relationships within their local and broader communities and focus on how to create a more just society for all, and we help them understand their role as environmental stewards for current and future generations. We are dedicated to helping each child develop in mind, body, and spirit through a progressive approach to teaching and learning that is rooted in the importance of a diverse and multicultural education.
At the heart of what makes Fieldston Middle a warm, student-centered community is our faculty, who are passionate educators of young people. Our teachers engage students in an academically rigorous program that balances exploration and discovery in the visual and performing arts, music, humanities, math and sciences, classical and modern languages, physical education, and athletics. We believe that to live our mission to “develop individuals who are competent to change their environment to greater conformity with moral ideals” requires that students develop skills in multiple areas, including social-emotional intelligence. Our program includes a grade dean who stays with students from 6th through 8th grade, a grade-level coordinator who works with teachers to develop a signature grade-wide experience, and an advisory model that places students with a small peer cohort for the year with one adult to ensure that each child is known. We strive to create a learning environment that is engaging, relevant, and one where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves. We celebrate the intersectionality of the different and multiple identities that our students, families, faculty, staff, and administrators bring to our community and acknowledge that an excellent, holistic, and progressive education must include being open to learning from the multiple perspectives and experiences that enrich and contribute to the individuals who make up our community and society.
Key to what makes Fieldston a special place is the relationships that develop here. As faculty guide students through these critical years of social, emotional, and physical growth, we encourage a collaborative partnership with families so that we can provide our students with the opportunity to think critically, develop their individual identities and voices as we hope to nurture them into leaders who will make a difference today and in the future. Our students and faculty are partners in the learning process, and our students develop friendships here that often last a lifetime.
To learn more, I encourage you to visit our campus. I look forward to meeting you soon!
